Karakeep
Karakeep is a read-it-later website/application/browser extension made to save web articles/videos for later. It is an alternative to Omnivore, the archived project.
A Discovery
When I first found out about read-it-later apps, it was 2022 and I was watching an Ali Abdaal video. The one I heard about was Readwise.
The Search
You see, the problem with Readwise was that it wasn’t free. The same was true for many others. When I tried to find a free option, I only ended up with Instapaper. Instapaper technically was freemium, but its free plan was extremely limiting, with only 5 notes(including highlights) per month. The only way to bypass that was to pay them 6 pounds. And that was the end of my search.
The Search, again
But a week ago, I thought of Instapaper and Readwise, and I decided to give it another shot. This time around, I also had a VPS under my belt. Because of that, I was able to self-host my own read-it-later application. All I had to do was find one (or make one but I was too lazy for that). And eventually, after searching on Perplexity for way too long, I found Omnivore. It was perfect, except it wasn’t. It had been acquired by Eleven Labs and most of the contributors were inactive. Because of that, I had to find an alternative.
Success
And that’s where I found Karakeep! It had everything I needed: a beautiful UI, unlimited notes and highlights, and both a browser extension and a mobile app. I even gave it to my sister!
